30th Anniversary Celebrations

"In late 1984 I became very interested in the hospice movement and started looking into what was involved. In 1985 I lost a dear friend and Godmother to our son, Jean Spouge, from cervical cancer, she was just 38.

“Sadly Jean died on her own in a 4 bedded ward at the City General and as a result of this along with the many many patients I had cared for over the years I felt it was time something was done where terminally ill patients could die with dignity, respect and love all around them.” Gill Melrose, Founder of the Eden Valley Hospice Appeal.

2021 will be a special and significant year for Eden Valley Hospice and Jigsaw, it will mark three decades of caring for local people with life limiting illnesses. Technology, medication and our care have changed over the decades, but one thing has remained constant… Time. Our staff are fortunate to have the time to spend with our patients and their families during the difficult times and this is possible thanks to your support.

“It was full steam ahead then on the part of Margaret Dunne, Julie Fisher and Sr. Carol to ensure that everything was ready for the opening of the Day Care Centre which took place on 24 October 1991.

“We started off with four patients once a week on a Monday, and there were three volunteers to help with driving and generally looking after the patients. The patients seemed to thoroughly enjoy themselves which was a joy to see.” Sr. Bernadette, one of the first people to work at Eden Valley Hospice.

The hospice will celebrate this fantastic achievement with the community, as it is thanks to your amazing support that we can continue to care for local people. Full details of our anniversary year will be announced in the autumn of 2020, but you can get involved with the planning and preparations today.

You can help to shape our 30th Anniversary celebrations. If you have any memories or photographs of Eden Valley Hospice and Jigsaw over the last three decades, which you are happy to share, please send them to communications@edenvalleyhospice.org. Whether you have memories of our care, pictures from our fundraising events or newspaper clippings about the hospice, you can be part of our 30th Anniversary celebrations.

“The only thing that matters is that the hospice is a success and the need has been well established. It is now up to everyone to maintain this wonderful establishment and prove yet again that we must never let it fail but we move onwards and upwards to maintain the excellence in care the dedicated staff and volunteers provide for the patients and their relatives.” Gill Melrose.

In acknowledgement of Gill Melrose’s amazing work in establishing the hospice throughout the 1980’s we have dedicated a leaf on our Memory Tree as a permanent thank you.
