A generous donation from Cowper’s Mobility Centre

6 May 2026

Eden Valley Hospice and Jigsaw, Cumbria’s Children’s Hospice, have received a generous donation of specialist equipment from Cowper’s Mobility Centre, which will help enhance comfort and care for patients and families across their services.

The donation includes a full Opera profiling bed with an associated mattress, alongside an Alert Ruby2 pressure mattress. The equipment, originally part of Cowper’s Mobility Centre stock, is in excellent condition and will make a huge difference to Eden Valley Hospice and Jigsaw, who provide specialist, compassionate care for adults, children and families living with life-limiting conditions. The equipment, being sold in the Hospice’s Furniture Shop, will raise vital funds to provide comfort, dignity and support to those who need it.

The gift comes as Cowper’s Mobility Centre closed its doors at the end of April, following increasing financial pressures caused by rising overheads and the challenges of competing with online retailers. Despite this difficult decision, the team chose to ensure the equipment could continue to make a meaningful difference within the local community. While Cowper’s Mobility Centre is closing, Cowper’s Chemist on King Street in Penrith, which has served the community since 1899, remains very much open, continuing its longstanding commitment to local people.

A spokesperson from Cowper’s Mobility Centre, said, “Whilst we are understandably sad at the closure of our mobility store, we were delighted to be able to donate this equipment to Eden Valley Hospice and Jigsaw in order for them to raise much needed funds”.

Clare Sykes, Shop Manager at the Eden Valley Hospice and Jigsaw Furniture Shop, said, “This is an incredibly kind and thoughtful donation, and one that will make a real difference to the people we care for. We are deeply grateful to Cowper’s Mobility Centre for choosing to support the hospices in this way, particularly at such a challenging time for their business. Community generosity like this helps us continue to provide compassionate, high-quality care when it’s needed most.”

The Opera profiling bed with the mattress was sold almost immediately to a family whose mother is in her 90s and will massively benefit from the adjustable and comfortable design.

Eden Valley Hospice and Jigsaw rely on the kindness and generosity of the local community to fund 80% of their running costs, with 20% funded by the NHS. Local businesses donating end-of-line stock or quality items they no longer need helps fund the vital support they offer the community.
