What have we done in year one?

A year ago we focused on three ways to ensure Eden Valley Hospice and Jigsaw, Cumbria’s Children’s Hospice, are serving our community.

We want to be effective at what we do, collaborative in the way we do it and become more sustainable so we can continue to serve our community for many years to come.

Over the last 12 months this a taster of how we are doing!

Effective:

  • Increased the number of adults and children receiving care from our specialist teams
  • Developing a new service for young adults with complex needs
  • Taking part in national research projects to improve palliative care understanding
  • Investing in staff development (internal training and external qualifications) and shared learning
  • Introduced a vending machine for 24-hour access to snacks for families and teams

Collaborative:

  • Reshaped our Living Well and Outreach Services working with other organisations to reach more people
  • Hosting student nurses, social workers, counsellors and medical students to support the development of our future workforce
  • Working with specialist services for complex patients with learning disabilities, dementia and mental health problems

Sustainable:

  • Replaced most of our 30+ year old plumbing system to make it fit for the future, safer and more efficient
  • Private garden space for our Jigsaw rooms
  • Improved our internal and external lighting to make us more efficient
  • Supporting national campaigns to raise the profile of palliative care and the hospice sector with Hospice UK and Together for Short Lives
  • Replaced and increased our solar panels making us more efficient
