Charity shop you work in: Bookshop

  1. What is your favorite part about working/volunteering in our charity shops?

Interacting with customers, helping in a very small way to keep the doors of the hospice open for all.

  1. How long have you been working/volunteering in the charity shop, and what inspired you to get involved?

9 years, I was employed by Laing PLC at the time when Sir Maurice Laing gifted the land which the hospice is built on. I have been involved ever since.

  1. Why do you think charity shops are important to the community and to supporting hospice services?

Hospices in general are struggling for money with most in a deficit and limited funding from the government. Were it not for charity shops many charities would fail. It is vital the community stays involved.

  1. Can you share a memorable experience or moment while working in the shop that has had a positive impact on you?

A lady customer came into the shop, the lady’s husband had passed away just a few days before and she needed someone to talk to about him. It was a great feeling to know how much she appreciated chatting.

  1. In your opinion, what makes Eden Valley Hospice and Jigsaw’s shops special compared to other charity shops?

We take great pride in how the bookshop is presented, it is very light and welcoming. A large number of customers tell us that our shop is the best charity shop they have ever visited and that the staff are always willing to help in any way they can.
