Helena is a volunteer in our popular Lanes Bookshop helping to sort books and be a friendly face to serve our valued customers.
– What is your volunteer role at the hospice, and can you explain to people what you do?
I work as a volunteer in the bookshop, my main roles involve sorting through books, pricing them and working on the till.
I am interested in religious books, so Diane (bookshop manager) lets me sort through them regularly, which is great.
– How did you start volunteering with EVH?
I was volunteering in a few charity shops across Carlisle but wasn’t quite feeling it. My friend who works in the Lonsdale Street Shop suggested volunteering and as soon as I started, I felt really comfortable and really happy.
– What do you like most about volunteering with us?
I like the fact I’m making a difference, meeting people and our manager, Diane, as she is kind and makes you feel welcome.
– Would you recommend to other people? And if so, why?
Yes absolutely, I think for me as I had been poorly it was a good way to get out the house. It is so worth it to meet new people, learn new skills and it gives you something to look forward to.
