Georgie heads into final straight of fundraising challenge
- Monday, 04 February 2019
In May 2018 a local woman set herself the challenge of completing 40 challenges before she turned 40. With just 4 months to go Georgie McRoberts has completed some incredible challenges but is looking for support from the local community to complete the final challenges.
The year long fundraising challenge is special for Georgie as she raises money for Eden Valley Hospice and Prostate Cancer UK. To date Georgie has raised £1,000 for both charities and is hoping to reach £2,000 for each charity which if achieved she will add a head shave to the challenge.
Speaking in May 2018 Georgie explained,
“40 is a milestone and the idea of completing a series of challenges whilst helping amazing charities in the run up to it helps me to focus my energy into the challenges and doesn’t allow me time to dwell on hitting the big 40! The huge added bonus has been how much interest and support my challenges have garnered so far which will hopefully help Eden Valley Hospice, Jigsaw and Prostate Cancer UK and draw attention to the great work carried out by all three.”
Georgie, from Carlisle, has already completed 20 challenges, including the Great Cumbrian Run, a 40 hour fast, Via Ferrata, Rolling down Carlisle Castle hill and a Sky Dive. In addition to completing half the challenge Georgie has 6 ongoing challenges including covering 4,000 miles on foot in the year, a new qualification and 40 hours charity work.
“I met some truly inspirational people whilst completing my 7 marathons in 7 days (March for Men) and the support I have had from friends and family with the challenges so far has kept me going.
“Via Feratta was the hardest individual challenge, but the daily 11 miles to get to 4,000 mile target with dark mornings and nights is proving the hardest and I can’t wait for the clocks to change”.
“There are lots of memorable stories, but the biggest giggle has to be the video of my attempt at rolling down the castle hill.”
Over the coming 4 months, Georgie has 14 challenges to complete including wearing fancy dress when no one else is, a retro challenge, the Seville Marathon on 17 February and to camp under the stars. Georgie is now looking for the local community to help her complete the 40 before 40 challenge.
“The one that I would most welcome support is the retro challenge (40 mins each of Roller Skating, Skipping, Hula Hoop and Pogo Stick). Is there is a sports hall or a flat area for completing the roller skating that someone could offer?. It would also be fab if I could get more people involved. So far I have two people signed up to join in, but if we could get a team going it would be fantastic and maybe change the individual skipping to an old style long rope which we could all jump and have a mini roller disco!”.
“I am also short on my charity hours, so anyone who needs any voluntary work could you let me know.”
The money raised by Georgie will help the local charity to provide care, support and activities to adults and children with life limiting illnesses. This care and compassion is extended to all the patients’ families, friends and carers.
