Nicola Stevenson and her family

Nicola prepares to run in aid of the hospice!

A local woman will be racing around the streets of Newcastle on Sunday 9th September 2018 to help the care, support and activities at Eden Valley Hospice and Jigsaw, Cumbria’s Children’s Hospice.

This year’s Great North Run will be special for Nicola Stevenson as she runs in aid of the local charity. Nicola will be joined by a team of Eden Valley Hospice and Jigsaw fundraisers on the start line as they raise money to support this hospice’s nurses and specialist doctors.

Nicola, from Clifton near Penrith, explains,

“There was never going to be any other charity in which I would raise money for other than Eden Valley Hospice. The hospice cared for my Dad, George Strong, back in 2005. He was admitted to the hospice for the last 10 days of his life having put up an extremely brave fight with cancer. Unfortunately, he lost his 5 year battle aged 55 years old on Christmas Day 2005. I remember he passed at exactly 4pm and he was surrounded by us all – his forever loving family.

“The hospice provided such fantastic care and support to both my Dad and my family and will always remain a very special place for us all.”

She continued,

“I am new to running, only starting last year running once per week through a running club. I watch the Great North Run every year and have always had so much admiration for the participants taking part but never quite thought I would ever be near good enough to take part. This year I turn 40 and so I thought what better time than now to sign up for this amazing event. This is the perfect year for me to become fit and focused to do well in an event through the sport of running which I have never been good at. I love a challenge, and this is a big one for me!”

Every runner taking part in this year’s Great North Run will have their own memory, reasons and purpose for completing the 13.1-mile course. Whether it is to set a personal best time or to raise money in aid of charity they will create memories which will last a life time.

Nicola added

“I have been told the atmosphere at the Great North Run is ‘off the scale’ and this is what I am so excited to be part of. To be able to run this race to the best of my ability, making friends, being part of something magical, raise money for an extremely worthy charity and run it for my Hero - Dad.”

Nicola is a member of the Ready2Run Running Club in Penrith, which is ran by volunteers from Eden Runners. The running club is aimed at beginner runners or returning runners who have been fantastic in helping Nicola to run at this year’s Great North Run.

The money raised by Nicola will help the local charity to provide care, support and activities to adults and children with life limiting illnesses. This care and compassion is extended to all of the patients’ families, friends and carers.
